ABOUT THE SHOW
The Bindery focuses on book and print arts--but also design and [one of our favorites] typography. This season we wanted to think outside the box to where typography lives off the page and has powerful impact elsewhere. We thus partnered up with our friends and collegues at True Skool, who are experts at urban culture, to feature a graffiti artist. We'll explore on how words on walls mimic our experience of words on paper (or not!) Come on by to support this oft-underrecognized art form, meet the artist, and rethink your relationship to graffiti in the city.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Austin Wronski / El Gueros Murals
Graffiti Muralist
Emerging from the vibrant, storied streets of Milwaukee’s South Side, Austin is a growing dynamic force in contemporary murals whose work captures the essence of urban resilience and creative expression. With roots deeply embedded in the city's rich graffiti culture, Austin has transitioned seamlessly from the underground art scene to becoming a prominent figure in public art.
Growing up in the heart of Milwaukee, Austin was drawn to the raw, unfiltered beauty of graffiti, which became both a canvas and a voice for their artistic vision. The South Side, with its eclectic mix of cultures and challenges, served as a crucible for their creativity, providing both inspiration and a playground for their creative talent.
As a man of faith, Austin infuses his art with a spiritual depth and a commitment to uplifting his community. His graffiti roots, characterized by bold colors and intricate patterns, evolved into a profound exploration of social themes and personal convictions. This spiritual dimension adds a unique layer to his work, Giving each piece with a sense of purpose.
Transitioning from the streets to the walls, Austin now brings their vibrant urban aesthetic to expansive murals that transform public spaces into immersive experiences. Their murals are not just artworks but stories—each piece a dialogue with its environment and its people. From celebrating local heroes to addressing social issues, Austin infuses each project with a unique blend of personal and collective narratives.
His murals can be seen across Milwaukee and beyond, marking a new chapter in the city’s artistic landscape. Austin is celebrated not only for their technical prowess and innovative use of space but also for their commitment to changing communities through art.
Through every brushstroke and spray can, Austin continues to bridge the gap between graffiti and traditional muralism, crafting a legacy that honors their roots while pushing the boundaries of public art.
