Book spines can be highly decorative... but what about the other three edges? This course goes over several simple ways to adorn the additional three sides of a book's page block. Ideal for paperback books only; this is a beginner's level course.
The "head" "foot" and "fore edge" of a book are typically just left as blank paper, but these surfaces provide a blank canvas to imbue your books with a little more personality! In this class we'll explore three different methods of foundational decoration: speckled edges, full watercolor edges, and simple acrylic painted edges. We'll also experiment with tape masking to block out shapes and designs.
These basic skills are essential to pursue more complex techniques in the future (such as more detailed fore edge painting). This hands-on workshop is a great first step for understanding how to prep a book's edges for decoration, the tools and techniques employed, and the types of pigments that work best.
Each student should bring a few paperback books from home that they'd like to decorate (and/or a few from a thrift store to practice on instead if you like)! These techniques are best used on typical store-bought paperbacks or notebooks: items with crisp pages cut flat for a nice clean surface to work on. Please see photos for details or be sure to ask before the class!
