Hardcover 101: Hand-Sewn Memo Books

By The Bindery (other events)

2 Dates Through Jun 27, 2024

ABOUT ABOUT

Try your hand at bookbinding with this beginner's-level workshop that results in two 5"x3.5" memo books! In this class each participant will produce their own sewn blank books with a cased-in hardcover including a decorative paper covering, and a cloth-covered spine (all in colors of their choice)!

All materials will be provided and our instructor will guide the group through each step necessary to fully create a sewn memo book. There will then be time to create a second at your own pace, with assistance available. Make one for you and one for a friend!

Students can expect to learn:

  • Proper paper folding and collation for signature creation
  • Hand sewing a multi-signature volume using an unsupported French link stitch
  • Preparing and attaching endsheets
  • Gluing and assembling their outer case and spine from professional book board
  • Properly covering their boards with decorative paper
  • “Casing in” their page block (assembling the final book)

Each student will complete their books during the class, but they will need to dry under pressure overnight. Participants will be instructed on how to accomplish this at home or may leave their books in our professional press to be picked up later on.

This is a course for beginners, but does involve intermediate concepts and fine motor skills in a relatively fast-paced class environment: it is recommended for adult learners.  Some background in book arts will be helpful but not necessary. Students in this class are highly encouraged to also sign up for Hardcover 102: Blank Journals, the intermediate-level course that builds from this class's foundations.

All materials used for this class are professional-grade and included in the cost of admission. We hope you join us!
