ABOUT ABOUT

Try your hand at bookbinding with this beginner's-level workshop that results in two hard-bound memo books!  In this class led by The Bindery's lead bookbinder, Daniel Ehn, each participant will produce their own sewn blank books with a cased-in hardcover including a decorative paper covering, rounded corners, and a cloth-covered spine.

*Take our marbled paper class in advance if you'd like to make your own paper to use! If you'd like to sign up for both classes, please let us know BEFORE you purchase a ticket: you'll get 10% this class!

Otherwise, all materials including decorative paper will be prepped in advance and provided. Daniel will guide the group through all stages necessary to fully create a small sewn notebook. There will then be time to create a second at your own pace, with assistance avaialble. Make one for you and one for a friend!

Students can expect to learn:

  • Proper paper folding and collation for signature creation
  • Hand sewing a multi-signature volume
  • Preparing and attaching endsheets
  • Gluing and assembling their outer case and spine incluing rounding corners
  • Properly covering their boards with decorative paper
  • “Casing in” their page block (assembling the final book)

Each student will complete their books during the class, but they will need to dry under pressure overnight. Participants will be instructed on how to accomplish this at home.

This is a course for beginners but does involve intermediate concepts and fine motor skills in a relatively fast-paced class environment: it is recommended for adult learners.  Some background in book arts will be helpful but not necessary.

All materials used for this class are professional-grade and included in the cost of admission. We hope you join us!

*Masks are not required at the time of this posting, but are very welcome. This may change by the time of the class, and The Bindery reserves the right to require masks or other safety precautions at any time. Participants will be alerted to any changes prior to the workshop.

*Due to the small nature of classes and the upfront materials costs, The Bindery has a no refunds or exchanges policy. If you cannot make it for some reason, please send a friend in your stead and let us know!
