Our Doors are Open! (A Historic Bindery Tour)

By The Bindery (other events)

3 Dates Through Sep 29, 2024

ABOUT ABOUT

The Bindery is Milwaukee's longest-standing traditional book bindery. We open our doors annually for a behind the scenes tour celebrating our history--and answering, "What the heck is that thing?" for the public.

In the past our Doors Open tickets with Historic Milwaukee always sold out to just their members. This year we're switching it up to offer historic tours to everyone in conjunction with the beloved weekend celebrating Milwaukee's amazing spaces. No need to be an HMI member anymore!

Stop in for a tour of our facility with owner and Managing Direction, Zachary Lifton. This casual walkthrough will feature the areas where we print, sew, and create books using 100 year-old equipment in the heart of Bay View. We'll touch on our history as the former Wisconsin Book Bindery, the process to become what we are today, and a chance to see some of our tools and favorite antique machinery in motion!

This tour is Q&A-focused, meaning the tour will be tailored as we go to discuss what the group is most interested in learning. All guests can expect to see archives/photos of the old bindery, examples of  book repair work, as well as some brand new creations made daily. Everyone will leave with a tiny memento of their time with The Bindery--that we'll make together during your stay!

Our building is fully wheelchair accessible including its all-gender restrooms. All ages welcome keeping in mind that this tour is geared toward an adult audience. Close-toed shoes are recommended for the tour, and required if participating in the hands-on portion.

Masks are not required at the time of this posting, but are very welcome.

*Due to the small nature of classes and tours, The Bindery has a no refunds or exchanges policy. If you cannot make it for some reason, please send a friend in your stead and let us know!
