ABOUT ABOUT

Join us for an evening of book making using a traditional, Japanese-style of decorative binding. This popular stab-binding technique results in exterior stitching patterns that are visible (and beautiful) on the front and rear covers. Each student will learn two different stitches and produce two small books during the class.

*note: sign up for one of our paper marbling classes if you'd like to make your own paper to use for one or both of your books!

Otherwise all top grade materials are provided to really give your books an extra special touch, including:

  • A variety of fine, decorative papers to choose from for your covers
  • Traditional linen bookcloth to cover and protect the corners at the spine (kadogire)
  • Hearty interior pages (sutible for drawing or writing)

Each student will be taught a standard 4-hole pattern for their first book and then a more complex variation on Kangxi Binding for their second. Students will leave with the knowledge to create more of these books on their own at home (or in our shared maker space)!

*Masks are not required at the time of this posting, but are very welcome. This may change by the time of the class, and The Bindery reserves the right to require masks or other safety precautions at any time. Participants will be alerted to any changes prior to the workshop.

*Due to the small nature of classes and the upfront materials costs, The Bindery has a no refunds or exchanges policy. If you cannot make it for some reason, please send a friend in your stead and let us know!
