These exclusive evenings are just for YOU and your plus-one to learn letterpress together and make two simple posters using our collection of historic wood type. No other students: just one-on-one instruction!
Everything is customized to your specific skill level, questions, and needs as your instructor works alongside you to teach the core foundations of letterpress printing on our Vandercook flatbed press. Looking for one of the most unique date nights in Milwaukee? A birthday surprise for your buddy? A way to celebrate Mother's Day? You got it!
Letterpress Date Night is a good mix of technical info, and fresh, inky fun. The experience covers how to typeset several simple lines of your choosing, get them properly aligned and locked up for printing, and how to use our 1960's Vandercook. We'll get our print-on with some bright paper with a bold ink you like best.
Students can expect to learn:
- Basic tools and terminology to orient them to letterpress practice and process.
- How to set up several lines of wood type for poster printing.
- Proper press use and how to pull a print correctly.
Each person can choose to make their own separate poster or can collaborate on one together! Both attendees will have a hands-on chance to operate the press and make 5 copies (each) of their lovely prints to take home.
Plan your playlist and feel free to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages (we don't drink while operating heavy machinery)...but celebrate further after class right across the street at our neighbor, 1840 Brewing!

*Masks are not required at the time of this posting, but are very welcome. This may change by the time of the class, and The Bindery reserves the right to require masks or other safety precautions at any time. Participants will be alerted to any changes prior to the workshop. (For private lessons please alert your instructor if you'd like them masked: no problem!)
