ABOUT ABOUT

This intermediate-level workshop delves into all the skills needed to craft a half-letter sized blank journal with a hardcover, ¾ cloth covering, rounded spine, and decorative endsheets. Come make your own unique creation while learning the steps to make more from home!

Note: this class involves two consecutive sessions to complete your book project:

  • October 15th: 6pm to 9pm
  • October 22nd: 6pm to 9pm

___________________________

This class builds off of skills learned in our Hardcover 101 workshop (which is not a prerequisite, but suggested if you've never done bookbinding before)! All binders with intermediate level skills are welcome—meaning you should have made a simple book at least once prior, and have a basic understanding of standard terms and practices.

In this class each participant will produce their own sewn blank journal using professional grade materials which are all provided. We’ll be learning to sew multiple signatures on tapes, round our spine for extra support, and properly cover our case’s spine and corners with bookcloth in a color of your choosing!

All materials including decorative paper will be provided but students are also encouraged to bring a decorative paper of their own if they wish (roughly a 20”x30” sheet necessary with many options available locally at Blick or Broadway Paper). Want to make your own paper?  Great, join us for beginner or intermediate marbling first! The papers made in these classes are suitible for this binding course.

Session 1: October 15th, 6pm to 9pm

  • Introduction and basic overview of the adventure ahead
  • Paper preparation: folding, cutting, signature creation and hole punching
  • Hand sewing the page block (on tapes)
  • Spine preparation and rounding
  • Decorative headband application

Session 2: October 22nd, 6pm to 9pm

  • Board, cloth and decorative paper preparation
  • Outer hard case construction and covering
  • Final casing-in and completion of book*

*Each student will finish their book during the class, but it will need to dry under pressure overnight. Participants will be instructed on how to accomplish this at home or may leave their book in our professional press to be picked up later during business hours.

We hope you join us!
