Typewriter Mischief: A Night of Playful Writing

By The Bindery (other events)

2 Dates Through May 14, 2024

ABOUT ABOUT

Let's banish that writer's block! (...and have some vintage fun while doing so). This class offers students the chance to experience writing sans-screens on a collection of historic typing machines! Come clack-clack the night away with us.

Typewriters offer an excellent opportunity to compose differently in a more immediate, sensory, and playful way. Give your eyeballs a break from screen-time by going direct to the page!

In this writing workshop we’ll lean into manual typing as a way to tap into our creativity in a casual and fun environment. No former experience of typewriters necessary, though please note that this is a class geared towards adult learners.

Instructor, Lisa Floading, will lead students through a series of writing activities on vintage manual typewriters, for both individual and collaborative exploration--with time for sharing for those that wish. All typewriters will be provided so that every attendee will have a machine to use; however, if attendees wish to bring their own machine they are more than welcome to do so.

Students will leave with their own typed up creations, inspiration for future work, and a foundational knowledge of typewriting to go out and explore on a machine of their own! (Or by using one of The Bindery's collection by stopping by our community makerspace!)

Your instructor:

Lisa Floading is an avid collector of typewriters who enjoys sharing her passion for these amazing machines with others. As a veteran high school English teacher, Lisa discovered how creative writing students enjoy drafting on them as a break from the screen. She does minor repairs and maintenance on typewriters in her spare time and can be found 'round town teaching others.
