For a kiddo, plus one: come learn about letterpress by making your own bookmarks using wooden type! This class is ideal for ages 6-11, who must be accompanied by an adult.*
This hands-on workshop allows our younger audience to experience letterpress in a safe and fun environment using our small, table-top presses that are simple to understand and operate. Each kid-adult pair will have a chance to use our wooden type collection to make several bookmarks using letters/words/shapes of their choosing. This class teaches the basic concept of letterpress in a low-stakes, "go-at-your-own-pace" set up that encourages children and their guardian to work together collaboratively for success!
This class is taught by Bindery owner, Zach Lifton, who has over 10 years of experience working with children of various ages and abilities: teaching the next generation of printmakers is a critical part of The Bindery's vision. (Check out Wire Binding for Kids as well!)
Please note the following to be sure this class is a good fit for your child/situation:
- This class takes place in an active printshop environment where safety is important: the guardian is responsible for their child at all times and expected to participate along with their child, helping them as needed.
- This class requires sitting or standing still to quietly listen to instructions, spoken verbally, for periods of up to 15 minutes at a time.
- This class uses the following core skillsets: visualization, 3-dimentional thinking, medium/fine motor skills, spelling (if wanted), patience, planning, and artistic creativity.
- This class involves use of non-motorized, non-electric equipment that is operated using hands/arms.
- The class can involve the use of scissors but doesn't have to.
- This class involves the use of a rubber-based ink that is toxic if ingested, and will stain clothing. Aprons are provided.
- The space and equipment are wheelchair-user friendly (in a 100% ADA compliant building).
- The Bindery welcomes all genders and gender-expression in children.
- Any concerns/questions are welcome in advance: please feel free to reach out prior to buying a ticket.
*Note that one adult can come with two children, but two tickets should be purchased (one for each child). If you have a different need--such as mutlple adults, many siblings, etc, please call us before buying tickets at 414-482-3630. Private parties are always an option if this class doesn't seem like a good fit: we're happy to discuss.
