ABOUT ABOUT

For our younger fans: come make a unique wire-bound notebook along with an adult guardian (who will get to make one too)! This class is ideal for ages 7-12, who must be accompanied by an adult.*

Wire binding is a great entry-level way to learn binding basics, and put books together with ease in a fun, safe, and low-stakes environment. The resulting notebooks lay flat when opened and are great for coloring, writing or scrapbooking!

We'll use recycled materials from both your home and our shop: participants should plan to bring some items of their own to help personalize their books' collaged covers: cearal boxes, favorite old magazines, etc! We'll use these along with cardboard and other art supplies to turn our trash into treasure in book form!

Each kid/adult pair will have a chance to build two wire-bound books with fun, colorful interior papers and everyone will get to use two of our safe and easy industrial binding machines! This class is taught by Bindery owner, Zach Lifton, who has over 10 years of experience working with children of various ages and abilities: teaching the next generation of book artists is a critical part of The Bindery's vision. (Check out Letterpress for Kids as well!)

Please note the following to be sure this class is a good fit for your child/situation:

  • This class takes place in an active bindery environment where safety is important: the guardian is responsible for their child at all times and expected to participate along with their child, helping them as needed.
  • This class requires sitting or standing still to quietly listen to instructions, spoken verbally, for periods of up to 15 minutes at a time.
  • This class uses the following core skillsets: visualization, 3-dimentional thinking, organization, patience, and artistic creativity.
  • This class can involve the use of scissors by children, but doesn't have to (the adult can assist).
  • This class can involve the use of an exacto knife by an adult only (but doesn't have to).
  • This class involes the use of kid-friendly Elmer's glue.
  • The space and equipment are wheelchair-user friendly (in a 100% ADA compliant building).
  • The Bindery welcomes all genders and gender-expression in children.
  • Any concerns/questions are welcome in advance: please feel free to reach out prior to buying a ticket.

*Note that one adult can come with two children, but two tickets should be purchased (one for each child). If you have a different need--such as mutlple adults, many siblings, etc, please call us before buying tickets at 414-482-3630. Private parties are always an option if this class doesn't seem like a good fit: we're happy to discuss.
